Jack adjusted his collar as Merry arrived. ‘Sorry to drag you away from your duties,’ he said. ‘What do you know about the Vaughan case?’

Merry pursed his lips as if to whistle. ‘You’re interested?’

‘That depends on what’s going on. There’s talk of foul play.’

‘The doctor has been asking questions about rat poison, so something is up.’

‘What’s that got to do with Evie Miles?’

Merry’s mouth opened in surprise. ‘The entertainer?’

‘Mr Whalan and the purser seem to hold something against her.’

‘I haven’t heard anything yet but leave it to me. She’s a nice kid.’

‘I appreciate it. When do you come off duty?’

‘I usually have a last cigarette outside at midnight. There’s a sheltered corner next to the lifeboats.’
